Unbridled use of colour is key to this trend, from abstract to classic in all the shades of the spectrum. “Think Ziggy Stardust and Donna Summer sweating at the disco, and human Easter eggs.” J. Maskrey’s direction to Sharon Dowsett translated into neon pink blusher, tarmac eyes and rainbow glitter stripes.
At Marc by Marc Jacobs, blue, green or orange were boldly applied to the eyes with a matching glitter over the top while black kohl rimmed the lashline. Lisa Butler daubed luminous pink and yellow stripes across eyes and brows at Y3, while at Y’s, colourful glittering patches and circles were applied. At Yohji Yamamoto, blocks of colour on bodies starkly contrasted with naked faces. Models at Comme de Garcons wore Kabuki style make-up; white faces, red painted mouths and eyes encircled by red, pink or orange.
A more glamorous application of colour at Valentino: a riotous cocktail of neon orange, yellow and dabs of icy blue kaleidoscopic eyes were matched in their fury by hot pink iridescent cheeks and fiery red lips. Mary Greenwell took a “sporty approach to make-up” at Emporio Armani with swathes of green or blue eyeshadow brushed across the lids.
